Summer Reading Fun For Your Child

The Reading Barn gives your child a fun and creative experience, enhancing reading, writing, and math skills in a beautiful outdoor setting. The Barn is located on rural farmland with a majestic view of the Catskill Mountains. Our classrooms resemble the shape of the barns that surround them, and our creative arts classes are conducted in an open air pavilion, all within the safety and serenity of breathtaking Millbrook, New York. An individual educational program is developed to meet each student’s needs.

The program is limited to 35 children each summer.

Program

The Reading Barn enrolls children from the pre-kindergarten level through grade six. The objective is to offer a comprehensive educational tutoring experience in a relaxed, fun-filled environment and to ingrain a love of learning.

Each child receives an individual educational plan based upon a parent conference and an evaluation from a classroom teacher. Students are then enrolled for enrichment, remediation, or maintenance of academic skills. The student’s plan will address the following needs according to their requirements:

• An enrichment program for the gifted
• Special needs including dyslexia, ADD, ADHD (please note, special needs children are eligible for 10% reduced rates)
• Maintenance of grade level skills

Every student receives forty-five minutes each of reading, creative writing or math, and creative arts instruction daily. Each week academic and arts-related activities revolve around a theme. For example, if the theme is wildlife, student projects and assignments would address the topic animals. In addition, a visiting zookeeper or veterinarian would present to students and their families on Thursdays.

Hours of Operation

The 2023 five-week summer program begins Monday, July 1 through Wednesday July 3. After the first three-day week (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) the program resumes Monday, July 8, and operates Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m, until August 1.

Sample Schedule

9:30-9:45 a.m. – Assembly
9:45-10:30 a.m. – Reading
10:30-10:45 a.m. – Snack Time
10:45-11:30 a.m. – Creative Writing or Math
11:30-12:15 p.m. – Creative Arts
12:15-12:30 p.m. – Clean Up
12:30 p.m. – Dismissal

Duration

The Reading Barn is a five-week program designed to reinforce reading, writing and math skills. If your child has academic challenges, it is highly recommended that he or she attend for the entire duration. Students enrolled for enrichment could be considered for one week of absence or an alternative schedule.

If a student has academic challenges it is highly recommended that the student attend for the entire duration of the program.
